The Glad Tidings of God

It was a time of deep silence, where nothing was heard from the heavens. There was not heard of a “Thus says the Lord” statement.

Luke 1

I am intrigued by the story told in the 1st chapter of Luke because of its encouraging message.

We are told that it was a period lasting up to 400 years between the book of Malachi (the last in the OT) and Matthew before the word of the Lord came to man.

It was a time of deep silence, where nothing was heard from the heavens. There was not heard of a “Thus says the Lord” statement. It must have been a trying time for the priests in that period especially for our dearly beloved priest Zechariah.

It must have been hard for Zechariah to be going into the temple and inner courts to offer the sacrifice to God without any response and even much more difficult knowing that he and his wife had trusted in the Lord for a child but had none and now they were in their old age.

There wasn't much to look forward to.

The Glad Tidings

However, a remarkable incident took place , an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah the priest, an angel!

The angel went ahead and delivered the glad tidings of the Lord unto Zechariah. The news that what he and his wife Elizabeth had been asking the good Lord for had been heard and now the request was going to be granted despite their old age and Elizabeth's barrenness!

This news went against the odds that faced them because the Lord had proclaimed that they were going to have a son and not just a son but a son who would prepare the way for the Messiah! The deliverance of Israel! The consolation of Israel!

In spite of the wonderful news, Zechariah doubted (and I would too) and as a result he was dumb until the child was born.

The amazing thing about this true story is the way God showed up. He showed up at a time when I believe all men had turned to their own ways, the priests were performing their priestly duties just for the sake as it became routine.

To add to it, when God showed up, He was precisely specific, He even admits to Zechariah through His angel that He has heard the ‘many prayers’ of Zechariah and Elizabeth. He has now come to fulfill their request despite the odds of barrenness and old age meaning that God is not limited by natural circumstances that spell the end for us.

He goes on to give Zechariah the details of what his child shall be like, what his purpose on earth shall be and his name too! The Lord did not leave anything out!

You can imagine how long this couple had waited, the weariness they had endured, the longing they had day after day, month after month, year after year without hearing a single tingle from heaven and now on just one fateful day, the answer finally came and not just an answer but a detailed description of the answer!

Mission Impossible?? Nothing Is Impossible With God

It was so wonderful that Zechariah could hardly believe it. The angel then says something that causes my spirit to rise and my heart to sing in verses 36-37 “It was said of Elizabeth she is barren and she is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible with God.” (paraphrased)

It was said, meaning it was talk of the town that Elizabeth could not have children because of her state but according to God there is nothing impossible for Him.

Your entire world could be saying of your situation that it's over for you, that you don't stand a chance, that you should give up on all hopes of becoming that person you dreamed of but God’s word about your situation is all that matters and you can be confident that it is a good word.

You can be confident because His word tells us in the book of James that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights additionally, Paul says in the book of Romans that God’s will is good, acceptable and perfect!

Zechariah and his wife’s story changed all because the word of the Lord came to them; a word of glad tidings.

So what's your situation now?

What's the doctor’s report saying? Are the banks chasing you? Are you out of work? Is it that you worry about your tomorrow?

Well, I have great news! God’s glad tidings are on the way. In spite of the long wait, in spite of the odds stacked up against you, God sends His message of glad tidings.

Be ready! Stay steady! For God is about to come and change your story, to turn your mourning into dancing. Beloved of God, don't lose faith, God is coming to save you and He is coming to save you with glad tidings.
